The Use of Colour in Jason Aaron and Ron Garney's "Men of Wrath" Issue #2

Jason Aaron and Ron Garney demonstrate their consistency of panel construction and colour use to guide their readers' eyes in their second issue. While the use of colour as a guide is a basic tool in the artists arsenal, but the combination of panel overlay with flow of colour within the panel, emphasis and emotion is generated. As seen in the two page spread below, Men of Wrath #2 flows well while maintaining a smooth moment to moment representation of time through the placement of panels, and the yellow colour of the construction helmets. The helmets serve to guide the readers eyes so that facial expressions and gestures are interpreted before speech and environment.

The two men behind this comic flawlessly transition into a different setting with new characters with the syntagm at the end of the second page by using blonde hair to replace the yellow helmets. This brightness of colour serves as a strong contrast to the, overall, dark theme. The blonde colour of both the father and son provide support, aside from their positions as protagonists, that they will emerge as flawed heroes.
