PLUTONA: Second comic- Text as visual, McCloud's background as emotion and movement

Eisner thinks of text as a form of visual component for the reader, and the title is a perfect example. The "O" in Plutona is formed as the character's symbol. Carrier's definition of comics- the integration of words and images. If you change the borders of a word balloon, it immediately changes how you perceive the image, same with the font of words, which I agree with. Any artist can go beyond the boundaries to create meaning, and the "O" symbol becomes a touchstone image throughout the whole comic. The lettering contributes to the comic beyond the semantic meaning of the words, which means comics are essentially visual, even if they do have other, non-visual elements. Also, with Plutona's symbol in the title, we as readers get an opportunity to discover the genre, because the image can elicit so much in terms of the content.Metanarrative quality- lettering can provide information about the narrative, Lettering affects meaning, it influences the way you read (The "O")
The extra quality in the title helped me identify the creator, the genre, something outside the narrative
McCloud disagrees that the font does not matter, but IT DOES! The lettering affects the meaning.
McCloud states that "if the camera moves with the moving object, that object will remain focused while the background will now be streaked." The image of Ray's fist with the streaked background made me as a reader more invested in the action because the background and the image of the fist were working together to create the motion of punching someone.

Hague- Comics translate sound through images.

This comic has a very consistent black background and it instantly reveals an emotional effect and a tone throughout the whole comic. in this case, the black represents fear, mystery, the unknown which perfectly creates the tone in the continuation of Plutona. Although the background is not expressionistic, it still creates an unbearable tension that drives the story forward. This panel is a great example of how background can be valuable to indicate invisible ideas and emotions-McCloud. As I reader, it was immediate that the black represented nighttime, but because of the specific separation between the little boy and her sister and friends, the black background creates a whole new meaning, and that is the psychological inner state of the little boy. As a reader, i ascribed to the little boy's feelings because the fear of being isolated and not being as cared for does come from personal experiences, so it's natural that I sympathise for him.
