Men of Wrath- Back Story in a Way Only Comics Can Do

You do You, Comics

Jason Aaron and Ron Garney flex their ability to provide back story to their work, Men of Wrath, in the most cliche, yet impressive, way possible. The idiom, "a window to the past," is taken literally in Men of Wrath. Back story and character development is created through the appearance of events from the past, viewed in panels that are laid out to take the shape of a window. Within the hyper-frame that each of these windows appear, the progression of the reader is natural. It allows for these windows to serve as an instance in time, separate from the place in time which the plot is occurring, despite their position in the foreground of the page layout.
These windows are necessary to the development of the story, and provide information which allows for etymological connections later in the story. One obvious instance of etymological inclusion in character development is the obvious connection between the word "wrath" and the protagonists surname, "Rath." While initially understood as being a negative reference, research regarding the origins of the word "wrath" will show that it, from its Germanic origin, also means strength. This provides a lens from which to view the rest of the issue, as well as the series itself.
